An Introduction To Jataka Sara Sangarha

Om Namah Sivaya

Namaste All,

I have promised to introduce the classical works on Jaimini Astrology on this personal blog and of course it is theme of the blog. I am fortunate to study this text, of course not extensively. People can appreciate the genius of the work by reading “Jaimini Sutramritam”, by Sri Rangacharya, who has done an excellent research on this work. Keeping to my promise, I am writing a small introduction below, on “Jataka Sara Sangraha” by Raghava Bhatta.

“Jataka Sara Sangahra”, an important classical work on Jaimini, was written by Gottimukkula Raghava Bhatta, s/o Ramachandra Diskshita. . It is believed that he lived in around 1650 AD since the example horoscope given by him was worked out by the scribe gives the year as 1604 AD. It was told by the Guru of the scribe, Sri Iranganti Rangacharya, that Raghava Bhatta is a Telugu speaking scholar, and might have hailed from Telangana area of Andhra Pradesh State. The above work was written in Sanskrit language and this scribe is fortunate to have a look at text in a manuscript from though, written in Telugu script. It was printed with Telugu script an hundred years ago, and since then nobody tried to bring it to astrological fraternity.

Most of us are in a view that the delineation of Rasi Dasas is not indicated in the classical works. This text obviates the above notion and gives many clues about interpreting them. It goes to the extent of giving the results specific and unique to each Rasi Dasa.

For example, it indicates, by the authority of a Vriddha Karika, that the results of Drik Dasa shall be studied from

Dasa Sign
Dasa Sign in Navamsa
Dasa Sign in Dwadasamsa. (This is very special and specific to this Dasa)
Sign Arudha of Dasa Sign

Raghava Bhatta indicates that aspect of the planets on the Dasa sign and their respective Aspect Arudhas play an important role in Drik Dasa. Probably this is the reason for this Dasa be called as Drik Dasa. This again obviates the calculation of Drik Dasa based on aspect of signs as is currently being done by most of the scholars.

The example horoscope given by him in this work is given below, generated using JHora Software and of course the degrees of the planets do change a bit. Since, we never know the Ayanamsa used then, this is quite understandable. It was mentioned that Sakabdah 1526 Krodhi Samvatsara Jyeshta Suddha Shashti Guruvaram 50 Ghadiya 45 Vighadiya, Lagna Meena 23⁰ 46′ 41″.

According to Graha Sputa given by the author Moon changes to Leo 4⁰ 9′ 5″, of course there is some variance at the longitudes of other planets as well. The software gives a day as Saturday, where as it was mentioned to be Thursday by the author. Nevertheless it gives correct year as 1604 AD which is actual difference from Saka Samvatsara to the modern calendar of 78 years

Sri Raghava Bhatta divided his work broadly into two categories one Ayurdaya (Longevity) and other Phalita (Predictive part). The first part deals with the calculation of longevity and various AyurDasas. Next he dealt various phalita Dasas for normal and raja yoga natives. And then lastly, he dealt with the Raja Yogas from Jaimini Angle. He always makes a point in quoting the relevant Vriddha Karika verse supporting this interpretation. This is very important for us for the very reason this system has been a secret and nowadays new theories are cropping up without any solid reference.

He gave the following very special lagans that you never find elsewhere.

(Correction: It was informed by s/shri Sun22 and Ast that these following Lagnas were mentioned in Deva Keralam. Thanks to them for the information.)

Savayava Hora Lagna (Extensively used in Ayurdaya)
Sapada Ghatika Lagna (Chaturthamsa Lagna) ( --do-- )
Ayur Lagna ( --do-- )

Owing to the nature of this blog, though complete exposition of the parameters can’t be given, but various important Dasas mentioned in the work are given below for the benefit of the readers.

AyurDasas – Longevity based Dasas.

Darpana Dasa
Niryana Sula Dasa (For Self, Fahter, Mother Etc.)
Jaya Bhava Pamsa Dasa
Atmano Bhava Pamsa Dasa
Hora Dasa
Atmanadi Dasa
Brahma Maheswara Dasa
Sthira Dasa (Start from Brahma Graha)
Varnada Dasa
Drekkana Dasa (Both Ayur Dasa and Phalita Dasa)

It must be understood that though the above list is long, yet there are very specific and distinct rules of interpretation of each Dasa. For example the “Maraka Grahas” in Darpana Dasa are different from Niryana Sura Dasa, again different from Jaya Bhava Pamsa Dasa etc.

Phalaita Dasas (Predictive Dasas)

Raghava Bhatta has given a number of Phalita Dasas and some of them are secret as well. The following are for the benefit of readers.

Some of the Sampat Dasas :

1. Chara Dasa (Male and Female) for all horoscopes
2. Chara Paryaya Dasa
3. Sthira Paryaya Dasa
4. Trikona Dasa (Gochara Dasa)
5. Drik Dasa
6. Manduka Dasa
7. Nakshatra Dasa (Tara Lagna Dasa)
8. Bhava Rahasya Dasa
9. Rasya Bheda Brahma Dasa
10. Karaka Dasa (Atma Karaka Kendradi Dasa)
11. Upagraha Karaka Dasa
12. Lagna Kendradi Dasa
13. Brahma Dasa
14. Sthira Dasa (Phalita Dasa)
15. Yogartha Dasa
16. Drekkana Dasa (Phalita Dasa)
17. Prakarantara Drekkana Dasa
18. Atmasa Bhavapamsa Dasa (Calculated in Navamsa Chart)

As usual, he indicated the rules specific and distinct to each and every Dasa in addition to the general rules to be applied in all Phalita Rasi Dasas.

Raghava Bhatta gave a very peculiar way of reckoning the Chara Dasa. His interpretation of Chara Dasa is based on Padakrama of Chara, Sthira and Ubhaya rasis. Again, the dasa years calculation is also different to all other and he gives a wonderful explanation of his interpretation. Scholars adpet in Vedantic literature, for that matter, six parts of Vedangas do appreciate his interpretation.

He indicates the Chara Paryaya, Sthira Paryaya, Trikona and Drik Dasas are Sampat dasas and be used in Rajayoga Horoscopes and the results of those four dasas are equal. Trikona dasa needs a mention here. Most of us don’t know why this is also called Gochara Dasa. This excellent work explains the Gochara in Jaimini way and its application in especially in Trikona Dasa. That’s the precise reason why it is called Gochara Dasa. If we understand the Trikona Dasa as exposed in this work, we understand what Gochara meant in Jaimini. We can learn the Paka and Bhoga Signs distinct to each and every Sampat dasa, and of course most important and least mentioned by contemporary Internet knowledge, Dasa Karakas.

Next, He moves on to the Raja Yogas in Jaimini way, quoting the authority of various Vriddha Karika Verses supporting his interpretation of Upadesa Sutras of Jaimini.

Most of the above mentioned dasas can be learnt from my Guru Sri Iranganti Rangacharya’s commentary “Jaimini Sutramritam”.

The above list may not be very comprehensive, but this scribe tried his best to bring forth the various topics discussed in the work. This scribe feels fortunate and privileged to study the manuscript of this wonderful work. He tried his best to procure the manuscripts and fortunately he could get some of them, which has been put for download at the http://www.saptarishisastrology.com/ website. Of course, since the text is in Telugu script, people who could decipher the ancient writing of Telugu and understand Sanskrit could benefit from the manuscript.

Warm Regards,

Shanmukha

Dear Shanmukha ,
I have been following your blog for long and also your posts in saptarishi magazine.I appreciate your interest in Astrology.Your blogs are interesting and evokes interest in Jaimini astrology but there is no way one could learn Jaimini astrology as there is limited source of text from jaimini available from the net and the translations made by the translators are not upto the mark as they themselves mention there is a lot of hidden meaning present in the verses.

You limited yourself in presenting a clear picture in few places in your blog.

1.You did not mention claerly how many charakarakas are there?7 or 8?Atleast you could consult respected Sri Irangati Rangacharya And tell us what is the truth. We have been used to learn whatever is taught by SJC or PVR or Rath.IF the truth is otherwise please present us the truth which you found from your research for the welfare of the astrological community.

Regarding ayurdayas and dasa systems,i wish to tell you that there are more than 100 dasa systems but none of them give accurate predictions including the vimshottari dasas. Can any dasha system predict exactly the time frame of marriage or time of getting job which is the most commonly asked question in internet forums.

we should show respect to ancient authors who have written lot of works on astrology and devised many systems but we should not give much importance to it unless it works

Many people talk about BPHS as Bible but i honestly tell you ,the very few uncorrupted text from BPHS does not help in predicting

But at the same time there are so many astrologers dispersed in INDIA who learned traditional astrology and give more than 80% correct prediction with Rasi chart, navamsa chart and Vimshottari dasa with the ayanamsa system they follow like padmachakra method. But i wish THe author of Padma chakra method posts some other example and proves his case and propogates his method.

This comment by me is not to attack anybody or written in wrong intent but feeling of a similiar learner of astrology like you who has put months and years into astrology and is under the impression that too much of usage of intricate systems in astrology has created only confusions than enhancing the accuracy.

Please mention whether AK ,swamsa predictions are to be seen mainly from Krishna Navamsa chart ?

If i have hurt you in any way please do forgive me.Best wishes in your astrological pursuit.

Without accuracy astrology will always be seen as a false science by the people.

Namaste Ast,

Thank you for your feedback. Though I cant answer all the points you raised, let me add the following.

1. Yes, I understand Jaimni Sutras have much hidden meaning.

2. Its an introduction to the cited work.

3. I hope you would appreciate that my guru's commentary is far near to Jaimini. Of course, others may claim that as well, but its my experience.

4. The very purpose of endeavor here is to propagate that there are so much knowledge available. Not to claim myself any scholarship or authority. Whatever my writings could betaken as a notes from a sincere student only. I wrote in an article form whatever I felt confident.

5. If you look at the Chara karaka post, I hope I was clear on 7 Chara Karaka scheme.

6. Yes, I admit that there are many dasa systems, but all are not alike. We must use different pointers for each dasa. As you know, Jaimini is a lost tradition, we must try to bring it to its core and I believe I would try to do it within my limitations. As literature on Vimsottari etc. replete with so many works, I am trying my bet with Jaimini.

7. There are a good number of Jaimini Rasi dasas, for example, Chara dasa (Raghava Bhatta) method, which gives fairly good results in timing events like marriage. I have tested it on fair no. of charts. God willing, I shall produce it.

8. Your points on ancient work are welcome, but the taste of budding is in eating. I don’t care if I don’t understand Jaimini this life time, but if I proceed in right direction, I am sure; I will complete it in coming incarnations.

9. As I understand the relation between Jaimini and available BPHS, they differ a bit, but there are certain available BPHS versions which look same as Jaimini concepts, for example, Sridhara Commenary on BHPS looks just like Jaimini.

10. I get fairly good results with Krishna Mishra Navamsa

11. I do agree with you regarding the application of so called Techniques or intricate systems. I hope you understand I am concentrating on Jaimini System itself, not simply on a certain technique etc. If we don’t understand the system itself correctly, how could we move on to techniques? I understand Jaimini is a special branch, not a special technique.

12. We have people who could predict without horoscope as well. That doesn’t lower the efficacy of Astrology. It is a Science and shall be practiced as such.

13. As I said earlier, you points are mostly welcome and encouraging. Thank you very much.

14. I hope you join me in wishing that Jaimini become predominant in usage. Yes, there are a few works on it, but we don’t ever try to unearth them. People holding them, don’t give it to others, then how can we proceed in learning it? We have put them for download and translating for the benefit of all of us. I know what the response was. I request all scholars to translate them, then only we can say whether they work or not. I am sincerely trying to do it.

Warm regards,
Shanmukha

Dear shanmukha

Thanks for the reply.I am a novice in astrology. Not knowing sanskrit is my weak point.i wish i learnt sanskrit before i became interested in astrology.

i am aware of only English commentaries of classics available freely in the internet as i find lot of commentaries written by different authours. How would somebody know an author is extremely knowledgeable and genuine unless he is closely associated with him.

I am surprised to know that some BPHS translation is close to JAimini.Wish both saints taught the same thing

Does Jaimini teach anything about Ashtakavarga.Just curious to know.

I have no doubt in your teachers ability and knowledge.I read articles written by him in saptarishis astrology magazine and was amazed.

It is interesting to know chara dasa (raghava bhatta method)is fairly accurate in predicting things like marriage consistently. It will be nice if you could put up an example chart and let us know how it works .It will inculcate more belief in Jaimini followers and will evoke interest in many to pursue JAimini astrology.

I agree with you that we must revive JAimini astrology for the welfare of all and prove its authority.

I do not understand the terms u use in your blog like Vriddha karaka.IS that sanskrit or Hindi?

It will be nice if you can explain what is Vriddha Karaka

Dear Shanmukha

Your blog posts evokes interest in me to learn JAimini in detail.I also happened to read an article about Jaimini dashas written by Mr.B.K.Sen which was quite wonderful.

I learnt about chara dasha(RB-NS),Trikoota dasha(RB_NS),trikona dasa,Mandooka dasha and lots more from that article.

My only difficulty was that to cast the dasa cycle for each and every horoscope for the following dashas

I tried to convey this to the author of Jagannath Hora to include these dasha systems in the software.

But unfornutely my posts and threads created by me are not approved in the sohamsa or any of the sjc yahoo groups. So i could not convey my message to the Author of Jagannath Hora.

I believe it was because of you and your effort to bring Krishna Mishra Navamsa to light,PVR Rao has included Krishna Mishra Navamsa in Jagannath Hora.

I wish you take steps and convey the message to include the important Jaimini Dashas so as to do research on it as i can see your posts featuring in sohamsa list and others and people of SJC welcome your opinion.

I have a doubt. There is a chara Dasha By Sri IRangati Rangacharya in Jhora.Do you recommend this dasa .How different is this from Raghava Bhatta Chara dasha?

Thanks

Vivek

Shanmukha said...

Dear Vivek,

Yes, the article by Sri D.K.Sen is a wonderful peace to appreciate Jaimini System. In fact, my studies in Jaimini got pace after I read the article.

Your difficulty is genuine. If you can afford some Rs. 2000 you can buy Mindsutra's Jaimini Light software to get those calculations.

Though I can't claim it but I tried mybest to persuade Sri Narasimha to include Krishna Navamsa in JHora.

I have an excel sheet for Chara Dasa (RB-NS) calculation, if you want I can send it privately.

Chara Dasa (Rangacharya method) as given in JHora is completely wrong and I have informed Narasimha to modify it via different fora.
Still, I try to persuade him in all possible way.

Sri Rangachary's chara dasa is the True Raghava Bhatta Chara Dasa, which was modified by DK Sen regaring Antardasa calculation.

I am working on creating a software based on Open source of Mudgala Hora and tentavly named it as Jaimini Hora. Till now, I could complete Chara Dasa, calculation of different lagnas etc. according to Jaimini School of thought.

God willing, I would release it soon to the fraternity.

Well, JHora is an excellent software, but if you want to add these Jaimini dasas in JHora, it will be difficuilt.

Warm rgards,
Shanmukha

Dear shanmukha

I also noticed the differences in antardashas between shri Irangati Rangacharya and D.K.sen and wanted to test those dashas with the charts i have.

I downloaded Jaimini light demo version yesterday and since then trying to use but the software has prevented me from using the demo version as it asks for the software key before it starts.

It would be really helpful if you can send me the excel sheet which computes chara dasha(RB-NS).Please send it to my email address astrolearnjyotish@gmail.com.

Best wishes for your venture to make jaimini hora

thanks and regards

Vivek

Dear Shanmukha
I have been following your blog on jaimini astrology. They have been highly illuminating. Also I agree that Sri Iranganti Rangacharya has done a great service to jaimini astrology by bringing to light these rare manuscripts.

With regards to the methods in the works of Raghavabhatta and others I shall like to inform, that many of these methods are corraborated in Deva Keralam - Chandra Kala Nadi.

The concepts of Ayur Lagna, Sapada Ghatika Lagna, Savayava Hora Lagna, Uday chakra, Prakriti chakra, Vikriti chakra, Graha chakra, lord of rasi in 7th from rasi giving 10 years are all mentioned there.

Please keep on writing such articles.

Unknown said...

It is true that we can see some of the concepts in Devakeralam Volume 2 .English translation by Santhanam.Even SAnthanam would have referred To Irangati Sir while writing this chapter.

Does anybody know what is the nakshatra mentioned in Chandrakala nadi?

IS it the vipat,janma,MAitra,adimaitra........dasha?

Does any software gives the calculation of the dasa mentioned there.

There is one such dasha called tara dasha in Jhora but it is different from this dasa and also conditional

good work Shanmukha. keep writing.

Namaste Sun22, and Ast,

Thank you very much for providing such a wonderful information. I am not aware of these details. Really thank you. I will go get it today.

Coming to Tara dasa in Jaimini, it starts from Tara lagna. Well, SJC erroneously calls it Sri Lagna. There are, IMHO, 3 Udu dasas mentioned in Jaimini classics.

1. Nakshatra dasa
2. Nakshatra Raja dasa
3. Nakshatra Bheda dasa.

These dasas shall be applied according to yoga (Maharaja, Raja, or normal)on horoscopes as instructed by Somanatha in Kalpalatha.

One can learn the Tara lagna dasa from a very authentic article on web from Sri Suresh Chandra Mishra's article in KS Charak's magazine at

http://www.vedicastro.com/article-tara-lagna-dasha.asp

Shanmukha

Dear Shanmukha ji, Namaskar

I have read all articles on your blog. In fact, Jaimini astrology is my prime love and i follow it very closely. I have almost all available literature on Jaimini in print. Books don't give much information about the Jaimini dashas, though i have read Mr. KN Rao's books as well as Sanjay Rath's. I want to thank you for starting this blog. As we know, each jaimini dasha is very specific and for some specific reasons. May i request you to share something about drekkana dasha. I am totally clueless as to how to go about it and for what purpose it is for. Please reply either on blog or at my email that is : balram2005@gmail.com. I shall be thankful to you.I have jaimini sutramaritam by Shri Rangacharyaji, published by Sagar publications.

Shanmukha said...

Dear Sri Balaram,
Yes, as you rightly pointed out each Jaimini dasa is specific.

As I understand it Drekkana Dasa is a Sampat Dasa, that is a dasa which gives prosperity related issues.

Since 7th lord drekkana is important in assessing Raja Yoga of the native so is the Drekkana dasa stated from 7th lord.

To be frank, I have not experimented with this. Yet, Jataka Sara Sangraha and Kalpalatha deals with this dasa.

Instead, I request to concentrate on much experimented dasas like Chara Paryaya and Trikona dasas, which according to my Guru are wonderful.

Regards,
Shanmukha

Dear Shanmukhji, Namaskar

Many thanks for reply. I don't know why chara paryaya dasha is for when chara dasha is there. What exactly is the difference in terms of its utility ? Pl help me.

Regards
Balram

Shanmukha said...

Dear Sri Balaram,

OH, There is a very big difference between thw two. Chara Dasa is for normal horoscopes and Chara Paryaya Dasa is for Rajayoga horoscopes.

The calculation of Paryaya dasas will be different as the dasa lord will be the Atmakaraka and the planets in Kendras, Phanaphara and Apoklimas in successsion.

There is a Vriddha Karika which says Paryayasya Bhaveth Atma Karaka".

Do you remember the Jaimini 3rd source of strength?

Regards,
Shanmukha
